Ever watched pornographic films or videos? What is its impact on you? Do you feel disturbed after watching it or did you like it? It has been revealed by connexionssurrey.co.uk that a survey of over 400 pupils, aged 14 to 17, in four schools in the south of England, undertaken for the programme, found that the average young person claims to watch 90 minutes of porn a week. Three in 10 pupils say they learn about sex in porn. Aside from that, when they were asked whether pornography might give boys or girls false ideas about sex, 60% said yes.

Through the use of the internet, movies and videos with explicit material and other forms of technology, pornography is easy to access anytime, anywhere. Now, as concerned parents, what are your opinions regarding this matter? What if your child though enrolled in an institution which is teaching sex education is fond of watching pornography? What could be the effect this could bring to your child?

Has pornography become the new sex educator? Does teaching sex education in schools really help the students understand sex more or has pornography overshadowed what’s being taught in school? Pornography has created a deep impact on those who watch it since it gives them false ideas and expectations about sex. A lot of teenage women after watching porn became insecure of the appearance of their private parts and assumed that they must turn to surgery for enhancments because porn has given them the idea that only women with large breasts and shaved organs can give extreme pleasure to men. Moreover, these ideas also have been injected to the men as well and they are greatly affected by it. It has been said that after watching porn, a lot of men prefer women with huge breasts and are unimpressed with women who have smaller ones. Also, men who have watched porn craved in getting penis enlargement because they think bigger penises can turn women on. This is very devastating. It only goes to show that the teenagers’ reactions or expectations of what bodies should look like are framed by watching porn. Freakish ideas of physicality are now mainstream. Also, porn shows unideal ways of having sex and has degraded most women since in one pornographic film, I saw a man cum directly unto a woman’s eyeballs. Is this the type of idea about sex that you want your youngsters to absorb?

However, despite these alarming surveys and the unrealistic and impractical ideas porn has given to teenagers, teaching sex education in schools are not futile. It has been said that sex education still is very helpful to students since they help these youngsters know more about their bodies, learn more about sex and give them a deeper understanding of what sex is all about. Furthermore, they also provide students with knowledge regarding sexually transmitted diseases, methods of std prevention and warn them about the after effects of unsafe sex like unintended pregnancies and a ruined future. Therefore, while your child is learning about sex in school or getting ideas from pornography, constant follow up is still needed. Parents must not depend on what their children learn from other people or other sources only. Ask them which part about sex they did not understand or what do they already know about sex so that their questions are immediately addressed hence remove the misconceptions that they have in their minds.
