Surgery for Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the technical term used to refer to the development of mammary tissue in men which leads to the abnormal enlargement of breasts. This condition can be corrected through gynecomastia surgery.

Gynecomastia Plastic Surgery

This surgical procedure involves liposuction to remove the extra fat and tissue in the male chest area. However, a surgeon normally checks for cancerous lesions in the area before the operation. If the enlargement is concentrated to one side, the patient is advised to see a doctor since there’s a possibility that it may be breast cancer.

When cancer is ruled out, the first goal of the surgery for gynecomastia is to reconstruct the chest’s shape and size.

The Procedure

If the enlarged male breast is mainly caused by excessive fatty deposits, the surgeon may perform liposuction. If the enlargement is due to extra glandular tissue, the doctor would cut the tissue out using a scalpel. This procedure may or may not be done along with the liposuction.

To get rid of the excess tissue, the gynecomastia surgery expert would make an incision on either the areola (the circular area around the nipple) or somewhere near the underarm area. If larger amounts of tissue need to be removed, the surgeon may make larger incisions, leading to more visible scars.

Gynecomastia pain is one of the things you will face after the operation. The pain goes hand in hand with the overall process of healing. While the swelling is bound to subside in a few weeks, results often show three months after the surgery. However, in order to help reduce swelling, an elastic pressure garment can be worn consistently for one to two weeks following the operation.

Gynecomastia Surgery Cost

The cost for this surgical treatment includes the hospital or surgery clinic’s charges, surgeon’s fee, anesthesia fees, post-surgery garments and prescription medicine. According to surveys from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the average cost is around $3,400.

In most cases, gynecomastia cost is not covered by insurance. However, this does not apply to all insurance companies as the policies may vary. You can go through the policies of your insurance company to find out if such surgery expenses are covered.
