By definition, Impotence or erectile dysfunction is the inability to attain or maintain an erection. Although it may cause anxiety and depression, this type of disorder practically causes no major negative effects on one’s health aside from the inability to engage in sex. According to experts, there are around 20 million men between the ages of 40 to 70 years old suffering from impotence nowadays.

Impotence in men was initially perceived as a cause of an underlying psychological problem related to the feeling of anxiety and fear towards sex. However, experts have also eventually discovered that several men over 60 years of age also suffered from erectile dysfunction due to some physiological causes such as atherosclerosis; the medical term referring to the narrowing of arteries.

A person doesn’t necessarily have to look out for symptoms of impotence in order to find out whether they suffer from the disorder or not. The disorder is generally characterized by the failure to achieve an erection for more than a few weeks. When the person still hasn’t achieved a full erection under a long period of time, it’s advisable for him to visit a physician for further evaluation and proper diagnosis and treatment.

The best way to cure impotence is to address the main cause of the disorder. There are various factors that can influence the development of impotence. It could be a combination of psychological, neurological, hormonal and vascular problems. Aside from those, various drugs and diseases may also play a vital role in the development of the disorder.

Studies show that low libido is one of the main psychological factors that lead to impotence. Aside from that, erectile dysfunction can also be caused by a hormonal imbalance as well as various cases of thyroid related problems. Such cases may include hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. These conditions can decrease a man’s sexual drive, reduce his energy levels and maximize stupor.

Furthermore, impotence can also be caused by a combination of unhealthy lifestyle habits such as having an unhealthy diet, smoking as well as the intake of illegal drugs and alcohol. Among all these habits, smoking was found to be the key cause of erectile dysfunction.
