What Causes Male low Libido?

The drive to engage in sexual activity is common among male and female. However, the way it is expressed differs from person to person. Although it is natural for both genders, more men tend to suffer libido loss than women. Low libido in men can be caused by various reasons; it can either be due to a psychological or physical factor or both.

Alcoholism, low levels of testosterone, drug abuse as well as the intake of various medications due to particular illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure are some of the physical factors that cause male loss libido. On the other hand, Stress, depression, relationship problems and various emotional issues are the most common psychological factors that trigger the loss of the sexual drive.

Among the mentioned causes, stress was found to be the strongest factor to affect a man’s libido. Regular intake of medication due to various illnesses falls second to that reason. While lifestyle habits like poor eating, smoking and alcoholism come in third to low libido.

The level of men’s sexual desire is greatly determined by his testosterone levels. This type of sex hormone is produced the testes. Aside from increasing sexual drive, this hormone is also responsible for the onset of the secondary male characteristics, such as the development of larger muscles, facial hair and others. A male’s testosterone levels starts to peak during puberty. However, the levels may decrease over time and the man might experience libido loss as he ages.

The natural production of testosterone may start to slow down as the man reaches his early 40s. Testosterone levels might continue to decrease afterwards, especially when the man frequently engages in alcohol and cigarette smoking, which eventually leads to no libido. Aside from smoking and alcohol, not getting enough sleep and working throughout the day can also lessen the production of testosterone.

In addition to the natural decrease of testosterone production and aging, low self esteem can also hamper a man’s sex drive. Male low libido can also be a result of a man’s underlying insecurities in bed; he can be anxious about his performance or his appearance during intercourse. And finally, low sexual desire can also be caused by other various factors such as delayed puberty, infertility and erectile dysfunction.
