Healthy semen is a sign of good health in men. The secretion of healthy semen indicates the absence of any sexually transmitted diseases. Healthy semen also contains sperm cells that can long survive the acidic environment within the female genitalia.
Healthy semen appears thick and resembles an opaque-colored substance. It has a jelly-like texture when freshly ejaculated. However it loses its consistency and starts to liquefy and turn into a runny and clear liquid after several minutes. Healthy semen tastes relatively sweet and exudes an odor similar to that of chlorine. The sweet taste is due to the abundance of fructose in the seminal fluid.
However, various signs of abnormalities might also manifest in the semen. Unhealthy semen is thicker than normal and may even be lumpy. This might be a cause of dehydration or low testosterone levels. And aside from having the usual opaque color, unhealthy semen appears yellowish or reddish. It may also exude a foul smell. People with a number of sexual partners must be wary of these symptoms as the secretion of unhealthy semen is one of the common indicators of STD.
Although STD is one of the main culprits, unhealthy semen may also be a cause of an unhealthy lifestyle. Diet primarily dictates the general condition of semen health. Having a healthy diet will increase semen volume or at least keep it within normal levels. Eating lots of fruits, vegetables and iron-rich foods keeps the semen healthy. Drinking lots of water also keeps the body well-hydrated, thus supplying the semen with sufficient amounts of water.
Aside from a healthy diet, various vitamin supplements are also available to enhance sperm count. However, one must exercise caution in taking them. It is best to consult a doctor first before purchasing any products that are meant to increase vitality and semen volume.
Genetics plays a role in determining semen health. Having low sperm count, for instance, doesn’t necessarily indicate unhealthy semen since this condition may be inherited. However if sperm morphology is abnormal and motility is low, this should be taken up for medical advice especially for couples who plan to have children.
Semen health is important not only to achieve peace of mind among sexual partners but also for the fulfillment of the desire to have a healthy family later in marriage.
