Unfortunately, the marketing of Aphrodisiac has been capitalizing much on false claims. There is actually a shortage of studies to support the claims made on aphrodisiacs. In fact, there is no proof that ginseng or oysters or anything else in between, have an effect on human sexual reaction. It is believed that the only reason why ancient peoples believe some something to be aphrodisiac because of their close resemblance to the genitalia which therefore leads to its sexual powers. The classical examples for this are the ginseng, rhinoceros horn, and oysters.
The Food and Drug Administration said that the sexual effects hyped on so-called aphrodisiacs are mainly based in folklore and not facts. As early as 1989, the agency announced that there is no scientific proof whatsoever about over-the-counter aphrodisiacs as a treatment to sexual dysfunction. Some of the love foods sold is blatant rip-off while some are even downright deadly. Such as the case of the Spanish fly, which is the most legendary and infamous aphrodisiac from dried beetle remains. The Spanish fly can actually cause a rush of blood to the sex organs but it is also a poison that burns and leads to genitourinary infections and even death.
The difficulty in qualifying the success of an aphrodisiac lies in the fact that people can only provide anecdotal and subjective evidences about it. Apart from that, an obstacle also to obtaining proof of its effects is that some drugs can always change a person’s mood which might not be necessarily sexual.
