Have you ever heard of MRSA infection? MRSA is also known as Methillicin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureous, many also refer to it as a flesh-eating infection. It is a recently discovered type of STD. Some of the std facts about MRSA that you may find interesting include; what MRSA is, what makes it alarming, who are more at risk for MRSA and its symptoms.

What MRSA is~ MRSA infection as defined by mayoclinic, is an infection that is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria — often called “staph.” MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It’s a strain of staph that’s resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. It is said that MRSA infections occur in hospitals or other health care settings like nursing homes and dialysis centers. You may be wondering why MRSA has a nickname of “flesh eating bacterial infection, the reason behind is that there have many known cases in which people have permanently scarred, had to have a body part amputated or even died because MRSA ate through their flesh. Though these are very rare cases, nobody would ever want to experience such. MRSA could be passed through sexual intercourse, or any direct skin-to-skin contact among family members or sexual partners.

What makes it alarming~ Not only is MRSA highly contagious but it is also very difficult to treat since MRSA is very resistant to antibiotic drugs. Another thing that makes it alarming is that, its symptoms remain hidden for awhile which means that you may have acquired it without even knowing.

Who are more at risk for MRSA?~ According to associatedcontent.com, one study showed that 45% of people who experienced an MRSA infection were men who had sex with other men. Furthermore, most research show that people who have multiple sex partners are at the highest risk of developing this staph infection. MRSA is not always sexually transmitted, people who use drug needles are at higher risk of developing it.

What are the symtpoms?~ MRSA is an infection of the skin which means that a certain area of the skin will become infected, which is where you will ultimately see the symtpoms. Another thing is that an MRSA infection will appear like a boil, it will become swollen, filled with pus, reddish in appearance and is very painful. It may also cause fever, shortness of breath and chills in some cases. Ever wondered why it has also been called a “flesh eating bacterial infection”? The reason behind is that there have been many cases wherein people have been permanently scarred, had to have a body part amputated or even died because MRSA ate their flesh. However, these cases are very rare. Though fatalities and serious cases of the infection may be rare, they often when the infection is left untreated.

These std facts with regards to MRSA are very essential in understanding this type of STD. A word of advice; once you develop any type of symptoms which may have been caused by MRSA, it is imperative that you contact your physician.
