Sex education is already being taught in many schools worldwide and is part of their curriculum for many years now. Though this may be the case, still a lot of issues arise when the topic of sex education is brought up. Since this is a very delicate issue, controversies are abundant. Many parents are in favor of having sex education taught to their children and there is a very small percentage of those who do not want sex education to be taught to their youngsters. What could be the reason for such division? What are the pros and cons of teaching sex education for teens?

The possible advantages/pros may be;

~ The classes are gender exclusive so as to avoid embrassment from peers and the oppposite sex. This is also to secure that they learn only the things which are necessary to know based on their gender.

~ If sex education for teens is taught properly, it could become a regular course like Biological Science or Human Anatomy.

~ Youngsters are taught the correct terms with regards to the reproductive system, birth contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases rather than “street lingo”

~ Teaching sex education for teens can put an end to students belief in myths surrounding intercourse like – not being pregnant the first time.

~ Many students are already sexually active even before the inclusion of sex education classes. Anyhow, early inclusion of classes has proven to help these students remain either abstinent or to at least be responsible if they are active.

~ Appropriate sexual education can have an impact on preventing sexual problems in adulthood.

~ Sex education in schools educates kids on what some parents are afraid to.

~ Sex education for teens states risks and consequences.

The disadvantages/cons may be;

~ Teaching sex education in schools makes students more curios about sex.

~ It puts sexual notions and ideas in the students’ heads.

~ Teaching sex education to students may cause out-of-control classrooms if students take to giggling or making inappropriate remarks.

~ Most sex education classes are taught as a brief introduction to other subjects such as physical education or health classes which is not a long enough time to effectively relate such serious material.

~ Most of the time, sex education can go against one’s religious and moral beliefs. A lot of schools do not teach “abstinence only” but teach how to have intercourse safely, whereas many religious and family values stress marriage before intercourse.

~ Instructors are not always trained how to properly teach sexual education courses and may transgress their own beliefs or morals into the subject matter rather than stick with the facts.

~ The attitudes of parents, educators or religious leaders in the community can cause the subject matter to vary from state-to-state, or even school-to-school.

After learning the pros and cons of sex education, as a parent, when you register your child or teen for school or checking into various school districts, you must consider what form of subject matter is going to be included as part of their regular curriculum. Parents or students must have the right to refuse sex education classes if preferred. Schools will not change their curriculum based on one’s ideologies so if a parent does not want their child to be enrolled in a sex education class then other educational programs such as private schools, home-schooling or religious schools might be the appropriate option.
