From an ageist perspective, only the youth are entitled to sex, less so for middle-aged beings. Recent trends, however, have shown old people raring to restore intimate connection last seen in their prime. Sex is getting as older as it is younger.
More than ever now, senior citizens are engaging in acts unheard of since they were 17. According to a 2008 research from Sweden, the frequency of sex among people aged 70 has dramatically risen over the past 30 years. The study, published by the British Medical Journal, analyzed the sexual activeness of this demographic from 1971 to 2001. In 1971, 52% of married men in their 70s claimed to still engage in sex; in 2001, that number rose to 68%. Likewise, 56% of 70-year old married women had sex around 2001, compared to just 38% in 1971.Even unmarried old people are also getting laid. From 30% in 1971, the number of sexually active, unmarried, 70-year old males increased to 54%. Among unmarried old women, 12% are sexually active, compared to just 1% in the 1970s.
If polls published by The New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 were to be believed, more than half of elderly Americans are sexually active. The study, which had 3,005 respondents aged 57 to 85, also claimed most sexually active old people have sex at least twice a month. Ages 75 and 85 represented the oldest group in the survey; 26% of them reported copulating in 2006. Of this sexually active group, 54% reported having sex twice or thrice a month, with 23% doing it once a week.
Meanwhile, 73% of Americans aged 57 to 64 reported having sex in 2006. Fifty-three percent of 64- to 75-year old Americans also had sex. Among them, vaginal penetration is the most widespread form of intercourse. Half of the respondents younger than 75 said they engaged in oral sex. In addition, half of the male respondents and a quarter of the female masturbated within the previous year.
These figures could be very rosy for the world’s wizened people, damned to live a sedentary lifestyle according to societal taboos. Ideally, sex shouldn’t be the sole domain of the young. Fortunately, most of the participants understand this fully well. In the latter survey, they cited health problems, instead of fading willpower, for not having sex. In fact, more and more old people are opening up about their sexual needs. In The New England Journal’s survey, respondents represented 75% of the people approached by the researchers.
