Genital wart is a disease condition caused by the human papilloma virus. It causes unsightly growths to spring around the genital area. Although they are found to be non-cancerous, they still pose a great risk to health. Genital warts are highly contagious and can be transmitted through direct skin contact. The virus is classified as a sexually transmitted disease; a person can still contract it even with the use of condoms.

There is actually a variety of genital wart treatment available and it is left to a person’s discretion along with a medical professional’s advice on which option is best for the afflicted. Here is a list of genital wart treatment options:

• Podophyllin resin is a brown liquid which is applied on the wart or warts. This is done by a doctor or nurse and must be washed off four hours later.
• Podopfilox lotion or gel is a topical agent that is applied on the warts. A person can do this at home.
• Cryocautery (also called cryotherapy) uses liquid nitrogen to freeze reoccurring warts every one to three weeks.
• Laser treatments uses intense beam of light to kill warts. This is the most expensive form of treatment.
• Electrocautery uses an electrical current to heat a needle which burns wart cells and cauterizes blood vessels
• Surgical excision is a minor surgery to remove the wart with the use of local anesthetic.
